How to change your registered agent in Louisiana

A domestic LLC uses SS983 and the new agent's notarized acknowledgment and acceptance. The current form also identifies parishes where available business filings must go through geauxBIZ.

Choose the right Louisiana filing

Louisiana's domestic LLC replacement is a specific SS983 notice, not a universal agent-change form for every entity. The current October 2026 packet combines member-or-manager execution, the incoming agent's notarized acceptance and a transmittal sheet with parish-specific online requirements. Prepare those three layers together. A service agreement alone does not complete the notarized acknowledgment, and possession of a printable form does not establish that paper submission is permitted for the business's parish.

Procedure scope
Change of registered office or registered agent for a Louisiana domestic LLC using Form SS983.

Which route fits your registered agent change?

Domestic LLC: use SS983

The current form is for an existing Louisiana domestic LLC changing its registered-office location, its registered agent or agents, or both. It has separate office-change and agent-change sections. Select only the intended changes and use the LLC's exact name throughout the notice and transmittal information. Source 2.

Foreign or corporate entity: change forms

The official directory lists Form 346 for foreign corporations and foreign LLCs, Form 502 for a domestic business corporation's Statement of Change, and Form 354 for domestic nonprofit office or agent changes. Do not choose domestic LLC SS983 merely because all these entities appoint registered agents. Source 1.

Existing agent moves without replacement

SS983's instructions describe an agent signing a statement of its own new Louisiana address. Including a registered-office change in that statement requires matching old and new office addresses, written notice to the LLC, and a recital that notice was given. This is distinct from appointing a different agent. Source 2.

Prepare for the change in Louisiana

Check management before assigning the signer

A manager signs when management is vested in one or more managers. At least one member signs when management is reserved to members. Confirm the LLC's arrangement before circulating the change; the form's shorthand manager-or-member line does not erase its more specific signing instructions. Source 2.

Prepare the incoming agent's acceptance appointment

The incoming agent or agents must sign the acknowledgment and acceptance before a notary public. Arrange the notarization with the replacement provider before the filing date. A prior service engagement may establish commercial arrangements, but it is not the notarized filing acknowledgment described by SS983. Source 2.

Identify the parish channel restriction

The transmittal names Ascension, Bossier, Caddo, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, Lafayette, Livingston, Orleans, Ouachita, Rapides, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Terrebonne. Business owners in those parishes must file all available business documents online through geauxBIZ. Check this before assembling a paper-only submission plan. Source 2.

Choose a filing-evidence recipient

The transmittal requests the filer person's name and address and says evidence of filing will be mailed to that person there. Supply working daytime contact information. Do not put credit card information on the transmittal; the current sheet directs users to their geauxBIZ profile for stored payment information. Source 2.

Entity-type differences

Do not use domestic LLC SS983 for every Louisiana entity. The current directory lists Form 346 for foreign corporations and foreign LLCs, Form 502 for a domestic business corporation's Statement of Change, and Form 354 for a domestic nonprofit corporation's office or agent change.

Complete the Louisiana change filing

  1. Select SS983 from the domestic LLC section of the official forms directory; confirm that the business is a Louisiana domestic LLC rather than a foreign registration.

  2. Enter the LLC name and the new agent's name and address, completing the registered-office section as well if the office is changing.

  3. Have a manager sign if management is vested in managers, or a member sign if management is reserved to members.

  4. Have the incoming agent sign the Agent Affidavit and Acknowledgement of Acceptance before a notary; include the notary's printed name and identification as instructed.

  5. Check the transmittal form's parish-specific geauxBIZ requirement, submit through the required channel, and retain the accepted filing.

Form fields and statement requirements

LLC name

Enter the Louisiana domestic LLC name on SS983 and list it exactly the same way on the transmittal. For a group of affiliates, make sure the notarized acceptance identifies the company whose agent is actually changing, not a similarly named property owner or management company. Source 2.

Change of location of registered office

Use this section to state the new registered-office location when that location changes. It includes its own member-or-manager signature and date line. Do not treat entering a new agent's address elsewhere as a reason to ignore an intended office-location change. Source 2.

Change of registered agent or agents

State the name and address of each new registered agent being appointed in the agent-change section, with the required company signature and date. The form uses plural wording as well as singular; describe the intended appointments clearly rather than listing a provider's personnel as additional agents accidentally. Source 2.

Agent affidavit and acknowledgment

The incoming agent accepts appointment for the named LLC in this block and signs before a notary. Complete the sworn date and notary signature. The packet expressly requires Louisiana notaries to print or type their name and notary or bar-roll number on the document. Source 2.

Transmittal service and contact information

Complete the requested service selection and contact information using the current packet. Keep the transmittal separate conceptually from the substantive notice: contact details help route the filing and evidence but do not themselves appoint the agent or replace the agent's notarized acceptance. Source 2.

Use geauxBIZ where the transmittal requires it

For businesses covered by the listed parish rule, use geauxBIZ for available business documents. The reviewed packet establishes that channel requirement but does not expose authenticated upload screens. Follow the current online transaction's document and execution instructions without assuming that online submission dispenses with the incoming agent's acceptance. Source 2.

Physical submission when available

The packet provides a Commercial Division mailing address and a separate office location. Where physical filing is available, submit the completed notice, notarized acceptance, transmittal information and required payment using current instructions. The directory advises reviewing each form's submission instructions; do not rely on an older saved packet. Source 2.

Before you submit

The transmittal instructions require all available business documents to be filed through geauxBIZ for businesses in the listed parishes. Consult the current form rather than relying on an older paper-filing link.

Verify the change and finish the transition

Receive and preserve evidence

The transmittal expressly identifies the person and address to which filing evidence will be mailed. Keep that evidence with the executed notice and notarized acceptance. A complete internal file should show both the LLC's authorization signature and the incoming agent's acknowledged acceptance. Source 2.

Check each requested change separately

Practical guidance. Compare the accepted result with the agent appointment and registered-office location you intended. If both sections were used, verify both rather than checking only the provider's name. For multiple agents, reconcile the resulting list with the instruction so an unintended additional appointment is not overlooked.

Do not combine agent and management changes

The current directory separately lists SS983A for changes of members and/or managers. An SS983 agent-and-office notice is not that management-change document. Keep any management-record work separate and review it on its own requirements rather than inserting management changes into the agent notice. Source 1.

Avoid these Louisiana filing mistakes

Using SS983 for a foreign LLC

The directory's foreign LLC route is Form 346, shared with foreign corporations. Return to the entity-type section before execution. A notarized domestic LLC packet is still the wrong entity-specific form if the company was organized outside Louisiana. Source 1.

Leaving acceptance unnotarized

The current SS983 instructions require the new agents to sign before a notary. Collecting a simple signature or retaining only an engagement letter does not follow that instruction. Include the completed acknowledgment and the notary's required printed identification information. Source 2.

Assuming a downloadable form permits paper filing

The parish rule is printed on the same packet as the paper notice. A downloadable PDF does not override that rule. Establish the business's parish and document availability in geauxBIZ before selecting the submission channel. Source 2.

Questions about changing your registered agent in Louisiana

Does Louisiana require the LLC's manager signature to be notarized on SS983?

The inspected instructions specifically require the incoming registered agents to sign their acknowledgment and acceptance before a notary. The LLC's office-change and agent-change portions are signed by the proper manager or member. Do not confuse the company execution with the distinct agent affidavit block. Source 2.

Can SS983 change only the registered office?

Yes. Its instructions say the form applies when an existing domestic LLC changes its registered-office location, its registered agents, or both. Complete the office-change section for that purpose and follow the separate instructions when the existing agent is filing its own address-change statement. Source 2.

Do Louisiana corporations use the same change form as domestic LLCs?

No. The current directory lists SS983 for domestic LLCs, Form 502 for domestic business corporations, Form 354 for domestic nonprofits and Form 346 for foreign corporations and foreign LLCs. Use the entity's actual organization and registration status to select the correct document. Source 1.

Is the October 2026 SS983 packet actually the version reviewed?

Yes. The inspected official download labels the notice SS983 Rev. 10/26 and includes SS984 transmittal information with the same revision month. Its instructions include the incoming-agent notarization requirement and the named-parish geauxBIZ rule. Recheck the directory for later changes before submission. Source 2.
