The rule
Governing statute: O.C.G.A. Title 14 — § 14-2-501 for corporations and § 14-11-209 for limited liability companies; the annual registration procedure is set out in Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 590-7-4
The registered agent must be located in Georgia at a physical street address where an individual can be found in person for the company. A post office box or mail drop may not be used as the registered agent address, and an entity may not be its own registered agent.
Georgia frames the rule as presence rather than hours: the address on file has to be a place where an individual can actually be located in person for the company to accept service of process and official communications.
If you have no agent
An entity that fails to keep a valid registered agent and annual registration on file can be administratively dissolved, or have its authority revoked, under Title 14 — and service of process then has no reliable place to land, which is how default judgments happen.
