The rule
Governing statute: Minn. Stat. ch. 5 (§ 5.36, registered office and registered agent) and Minn. Stat. ch. 322C (Minnesota Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act)
A registered office address in Minnesota is required and must be a complete street address or rural route and box number — a post office box by itself is not acceptable. If you do designate a registered agent, it must be a person residing in Minnesota, a Minnesota entity, or a foreign entity authorized to do business here, and the registered office address and the agent’s business office address are identical. The entity may not name itself as its own agent.
The registered agent accepts service of process and notices sent to the entity; with no agent named, that mail arrives at the registered office address instead, so the address must be one where documents are genuinely received.

Nothing stops the lawsuit or the deadline: papers go to the registered office whether or not anyone reads them, and if the annual renewal is missed the business is administratively dissolved — no longer active in Minnesota — and must be reinstated before it can operate normally again.
