What does Vermont require of your registered agent?

The Secretary of State puts the bar plainly: the only qualification to be a registered agent is that the agent has a street address and a mailing address located in Vermont. The agent’s physical address is what Vermont calls your Registered Office.
Vermont does not publish a business-hours test. It defines the role negatively instead — appointment as registered agent neither confers nor implies authority to sign documents on behalf of the entity, nor liability for the business the entity conducts. What it does confer is the duty to be reachable at a real Vermont address.
If you have no agent
An agent’s resignation takes effect by statute on the 31st day after the Secretary of State receives it. If no new agent is appointed within that window, the business loses its good standing and moves to Terminated status until a new agent is appointed.
