What does Maine require of your registered agent?

Governing statute: 5 M.R.S. §§ 101–115 (Model Registered Agents Act), with 5 M.R.S. § 105 (appointment) and § 108 (change by entity); LLC formation at 31 M.R.S. § 1531; corporations appoint a clerk under 13-C M.R.S. ch. 5-A
A noncommercial registered agent is listed by name with a physical Maine location — the Certificate of Formation says physical location, not PO box — plus a mailing address if different. A commercial registered agent is listed separately with the Secretary of State and is identified on filings by its CRA public number instead of an address, and only Maine residents may be listed as a commercial clerk.
The agent is the address where service of process and the Secretary of State’s notices — including annual report reminders and late-filing penalty notices — are delivered, so someone must be reachable there.
If you have no agent
Appointing an agent is an affirmation that the agent consented to serve, and the state’s notices go nowhere else: miss the annual report, fail to pay the late filing penalty, and the Secretary of State administratively dissolves or revokes the entity.
