On California filings this role is called agent for service of process rather than registered agent. Why California says agent for service of process
The rule
Governing statute: Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.13 (LLC agent), § 1502 (corporate Statement of Information and agent), § 1505 (registered corporate agents), § 17702.09 (LLC Statement of Information)
The agent must be an individual residing in California — the statement then carries that person’s complete business or residence street address — or a corporation that has complied with section 1505, in which case no address is listed at all. A California LLC or corporation cannot name itself.
California sets no statutory office hours, but the agent has to be personally servable at that California street address; the Code of Civil Procedure also allows other methods of direct and substituted service.
If you have no agent
If service on your designated agent fails after reasonably diligent attempts, a court can order substituted service through the Secretary of State in Sacramento, which binds you whether or not the papers reach you. Missing the Statement of Information separately triggers Franchise Tax Board penalties and suspension or forfeiture of the entity’s powers.
